Learn more about our independent EV demand report, EVENLODE EDISON, developed in partnership with expert insight from low-carbon transport specialists, Cenex.
The report is developed specifically for forecourts and convenience stores.
A changing fueling landscape
Transport is moving towards a more sustainable future. We are told that in the future, the mix of drivetrains and fuel types will evolve. Retailers need to know which fuel types will be relevant in the future.
By 2035, the UK Government's "Zero Mandate" calls for all new cars and vans to be "zero emission".
New vehicle sales account for roughly 20% of overall sales, any by 2035, all of these new sales could be zero emission, and as more of these vehicles enter the second hand market, there is expected to be a gradual change in the overall vehicle mix.
With the average useful lifespan of a vehicle now being between 150,000 to 200,000 miles, and average annual mileage of around 7,400 miles, there could be an extended period of transition to a new fuel mix.
There are many alternative fuels being considered for the future, including bio-fuels, hydrogen, and, the current front-runner, EV.
Some vehicle owners will be able to charge their vehicles either at home or a place of work, but for many, this will not be an option. In some locations, over 50% of drivers will have to rely on public charging.
A choice of where to charge
Public charging locations can include both "destination" or "en-route" options. Destination options might include places like municipal car parks, shopping centres, sports venues, pubs, restaurants or supermarkets, where the vehicle can be left for longer periods and for whom speed is less important.
For many drivers however, convenience and speed will be key requirements, very much as they are now.
Forecourts and convenience stores are very well placed to serve this growing market, especially as they occupy the prime roadside locations.
Convenient locations for top-up and transient charging
Recent industry insight reports identify that public, en-route and very fast charging options are readily sought after, even by those drivers who have their own home charging available. Over 85% of current EV drivers use the public charging network.
Of course, some locations will be more appropriate for EV charging, and the level of demand at each site location will be different. As a site operator you will want to know how your site can offer a competitive option.
So what does all this mean for you and your site?
How can you know if EV charging will be suitable and if it could deliver you revenue?
